Self-Stick Metal Backsplash Tiles: Where Have I Been?

While watching a DIY kitchen make over show this morning, I saw a commercial for Self-Stick Metal Backsplash Tiles.  Whoa.. my ears picked up!  I have heard of cutting sheet metal to make backsplashes and adhering them with construction glue, but these would actually make a pattern!  Pictured below are tiles from AspectIdeas.com.

All you have to do is make sure your surface is level and even and prime with a fresh coat of high-quality oil-based primer (not latex, vinyl or PVA-based primer).  Work from the center out.  You can also add more adhesion by using a 100% polyurethane (tube) adhesive, such as Liquid Nails, PL400, DAP, Locktite or Titebond.  This brand is also resistant to heat up to 200 degrees for use behind the stove (check your appliance book for specific information).  Tiles are 3″ x 6″ and are sold in eight-tile packs (enough for one square foot).

Cutting tiles is relatively easy with a chop or jig saw.  If this is not available in your tool inventory, try a four-inch brick set chisel and utility knife with a sharp blade.

To caulk or not to caulk?  It is not necessary but you can use a non-sanded grout or  colored or white silicone caulking which is much easier to apply and will give the surface a water-tight seal.

Looks like Home Depot carries this product, along with a similar one pictured below that comes in 4 x 4 tiles.
