What better reason to have a blog of your very own than to be able to tuck all the ideas you find into one neat place. It’s called Inspiration and that’s what we are talking about here at Boyd Street Bungalow.

Dining in the New Year: Boyd Street Bungalow

Already wishing for a new dining nook area here at Boyd Street Bungalow to allow more space (what I have now) and here is what I would like to do.  Found the table at Wayfair.com but now need to figure out how to make the corner seating.  This will all begin in the new year.  🙂  Just tucking this away to remind me.  Stay tuned..

Designing with the Rule of Three

We all have our special collections or nicknacks sitting around our home, right?

Heaven knows, I have plenty!  Too much, in fact.  Trying to pare down now here at Boyd Street and at my other old house but that’s another blog for another day… 🙂

The question is.. how do we keep these objects from looking like a hodgepodge of what-nots or thrift store finds and instead display them in an eye appealing,  cohesive design?  Lamps Plus has given 3 good decorating tips in their blog for achieving this look.  The first is the Rule of Three as pictured below.  The concept is that items grouped in threes have more visual appeal.

The triangle in the picture above shows the group of three and how the bottom objects lead the eye to the picture.  For more tips, be sure to click on the LampsPlus link above.  I found it very helpful!

Young House Love

Take a look at what Sherry and John are up to now… another house crash… this time in the Richmond area and a house so beautifully decorated that they use it for commercials and photoshoots.  Love the painted ladder on the front porch.  Click the photo above to read more…

A Cottage Home: White and Blue Make An Impact (BHG)

White has always been a favorite of mine in decorating but when paired with blue, it really pops (told you I was coming around to liking blue.)  A recent post by BHG shows unique ideas in this decor and thinking outside the box.  Five stars for this BHG post and I’m putting this living room and kitchen in my “inspiration” box!

Farmhouse Sink & Table Island: Two Kitchen Ideas (Traditional Home)

I’m tucking away kitchen ideas for my daughter, Amanda, who will soon be doing a major kitchen redo.  Two nice kitchen ideas found from Traditional Home are pictured.  One has an awesome farmhouse sink and a mixture of colors in the cabinetry I find quite interesting.   Also the beadboard is just beautiful.  You can’t go wrong with white!

"Farmhouse Sink"

Another great idea is to use a tall square kitchen table as an island, another feature that lends to the farmhouse theme.  Love the candelebra chandelier, too (ya know my obsession for lighting fixtures!)

Just Move the House: Country Cottage Relocation (Southern Living)

I am really not a fan of blue.. aqua, yes..  but my tastes are changing.  Now after 3 years and all the interior painting at Boyd Street Bungalow being completed, don’t tell me it is time to start over!  Wonder what paint color was used on this paneled wall in the Country Cottage Relocation featured in Southern Living?

"White and Blue Country Kitchen"

Looks like they used the same color in the bathroom.  The white and blue really pop!

Think these pictures will definitely go in my inspiration book.

Self-Stick Metal Backsplash Tiles: Where Have I Been?

While watching a DIY kitchen make over show this morning, I saw a commercial for Self-Stick Metal Backsplash Tiles.  Whoa.. my ears picked up!  I have heard of cutting sheet metal to make backsplashes and adhering them with construction glue, but these would actually make a pattern!  Pictured below are tiles from AspectIdeas.com.

"Self-Stick Backsplash Tiles"

All you have to do is make sure your surface is level and even and prime with a fresh coat of high-quality oil-based primer (not latex, vinyl or PVA-based primer).  Work from the center out.  You can also add more adhesion by using a 100% polyurethane (tube) adhesive, such as Liquid Nails, PL400, DAP, Locktite or Titebond.  This brand is also resistant to heat up to 200 degrees for use behind the stove (check your appliance book for specific information).  Tiles are 3″ x 6″ and are sold in eight-tile packs (enough for one square foot).

"Aspect Self-Stick Wall Tiles"

Cutting tiles is relatively easy with a chop or jig saw.  If this is not available in your tool inventory, try a four-inch brick set chisel and utility knife with a sharp blade.

To caulk or not to caulk?  It is not necessary but you can use a non-sanded grout or  colored or white silicone caulking which is much easier to apply and will give the surface a water-tight seal.

Looks like Home Depot carries this product, along with a similar one pictured below that comes in 4 x 4 tiles.

I’m feeling a project coming on!!  Have you used this product?  Let us know.  Want to do a home renovation project this summer?  This may just be the one for you!

Enjoy and happy renovating..

Vintage Inspired Bedroom (A Well Dressed Home)

Being the vintage lover of all things that we are, we are truly inspired by this master bedroom make over of Jennifer’s of Momento Designs.   She worked with her friend, Emily of A Well Dressed Home   to achieve this fabulous retreat.

Look at the unusual wall treatment.  Just wait until you see what they did with the vintage inspired bird cage.  Click the link above to read the whole story.

Creating a Breakfast Nook (Southern Living)

Love this breakfast nook created by Lindsay Bierman in his kitchen space. Since we love lighting, we really enjoyed the large pendant light that swings over the table.  The simple white laminate table with the Louis XVI style chairs adds just the right touch to this all white kitchen.

Watch the video at the link above and enjoy…
